About Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a manual therapy with a comprehensive system of diagnosis and treatment using touch, massage and physical manipulation to work with the structure and function of the body. When the structure of the body is correctly aligned it can achieve an optimum state of wellness. In this sense, the role of the osteopath is to facilitate the body's own healing mechanisms. Osteopaths have rigorous training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical practice, clinical competence, pharmacology, psychology and sociology. Osteopaths develop a highly refined sense of touch 'palpation' which they use for diagnosis and treatment, and they are skilled in the manipulation of the body, making precise physical adjustments to the musculoskeletal system.

A referral is not necessary in order to see an osteopath. Osteopaths are autonomous primary contact practitioners, meaning that they are trained to treat complaints that respond well to manual therapy and they are also trained to recognise conditions that are not appropriate for their care. In relation to the NHS, Osteopaths have the status of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) which includes professions such as physiotherapists, paramedics and orthotists.
Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated profession (The Osteopaths Act 1993) and is regulated in the same way as conventional medicine. Osteopathy and Chiropractics are the only complementary and alternative medicines that are regulated under UK law. All UK osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety.
