What to expect

Initial consultation and treatment plan

Most patients visit an osteopath to address specific ailments; others visit an osteopath as part of their long-term physical health strategy. The treatment you receive will be tailored to your own specific needs. The initial consultation usually lasts one and half hours, follow up appointments are up to one hour each.

During the initial consultation I will ask about all your symptoms and also about your medical history, previous accidents or injuries, any operations and other illnesses. A physical examination will be carried out. If appropriate, you may be asked to remove some clothing for assessment and treatment. I suggest wearing comfortable clothes that you can move in without being restricted or bring suitable clothes to change into e.g. shorts. You are very welcome to bring an appropriate chaperone if for any reason this would make your visit more comfortable.  You may be asked to perform simple movements in addition to other tests such as blood pressure or reflexes.  Your eating habits, sports, hobbies, and stress levels are also discussed in order to tailor an individual treatment plan. Occasionally I have to refer patients to their doctor in order to carry out other investigations such as blood tests or scans which may be helpful in solving your problem.

I discuss a working diagnosis and possible treatment options with you, including the approximate number of sessions needed. I use a full range of osteopathic techniques including joint articulation, soft tissue massage, muscle energy techniques, high velocity thrusts and cranial osteopathy. These techniques will be used with your informed consent.

As with your GP, all personal and clinical information is dealt with in the strictest confidence.  Osteopaths are governed by the General Osteopathic Council which gives you the same protection as seeing a Doctor or Dentist.
